Have you ever been to court? I sure havent, and it was an entire new experience for me! But my experience at court all comes in tomorrows post...today is all about what I wore to court :) Luckily Jake was able to come in the morning and drop me off at court and give his support till he had to run to work.
When I decided to go to court to fight a traffic violation I got, the first thing that came to my mind is...'what to wear'? I have never known anyone to go to court or myself in court so I had no idea what to wear! I was also concerned about court educate, how to adress the judge, when to talk or not talk, tips in general for conduct. I was shocked about how much info is on the interent about court, so if you ever have questions, many people and court sites have mapped out for you what to expect, act and wear.
After doing lots of research, I learned a few things about what happens in court and what I should wear. Here are a few tips I picked up incase you ever go to court and dont know what to wear! Most of these are general thoughts, but here it is.
1. Wear Sunday Attire
(Men: Nice slacks, hair done, button up shirt, tie) (Women: nice suit or dress)
Its sad, but I really do think its true when people talk about how first appearances mean everything! When you literally only have a few minutes in court to plea, or contest your case depending on what its for, appearance can be everything! So dress for how you want to be looked at.
Heres a link to look at some more Sunday dress court attire here. Although this article said wear solids, I felt for me I like to dress to enhance my personality, so I chose to go with darker colors, and one simple print. I still wanted to feel myself in court, and be me.
2. Dont be to flashy
I had never thought about it, but I read in an article that it talked about, if your flashy you may stand out too much and if you are pleading you dont have money...why would they believe you if you are wearing some flashy items? Dont know if this could be true or not, but its some food for thought. I think its probably good in general to not be flashy so you dont distract the judge. You want him to hear you out, but if he is focused on a million gold bracelets on your arm he may be a little distracted from what you are saying. If he is looking, hopefully he can see the sincerity in your face and eyes, vs flashy items on you.
3. Black is a good color to wear
In court the judge wears a black robe. Many say the origin of the robe and it being black comes from back when the US was starting to be established and branched off from England. I think since the judge is wearing black, it sets a good standard to wear some version of black as well. I dont really own a ton of black clothes, so I thought a little hint of teal was ok.
